Rainmakers Debate & Speech Club
Proud to argue for British Columbia's northwest

Proposing and opposing since 2019.

The Rainmakers Debate and Speech Club (or Rainmakers Debate for short) is an official club of Charles Hays Secondary School in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. It is also open to students of Prince Rupert Middle School, who join the high school debaters for weekly meetings every Friday at 3:15 p.m. We are a member of the Debate and Speech Association of BC.

The club was established on April 12, 2019 after Grade 12 student David Armstrong invited Michael Gurney, a fellow member of the Prince Rupert Toastmasters Club, to coach a group of his argumentative friends in the art of the constructive debate. The coaching complement has since grown to include Mikael Russell, Amy Dopson, and Scott Langille.

David's passion for debate and public speaking was highlighted in a profile published by Prince Rupert's weekly newspaper, The Northern View: MVP of the Week: Soccer to Socratic. The same issue included an article about Scott Langille, who also plays an active part in the city's Toastmasters club: Heart of Our City: Langille is only getting better with experience.

Rainmakers have debated competitively in a number of tournaments and have meanwhile organized local events that encourage public discourse.
